November, 1620. Around the sandy hook of land at the tip of Cape Cod, a strange little ship named Mayflower sailed, after a harrowing 65-day trip from England. Land meant many things to the weary pilgrims but most of all it meant food and water. They stayed for a month there at that place we call Provincetown. It was here that the Mayflower Compact was written and signed, one of the first government documents in the history of white Americans.
"P-town" today is known for its narrow one-lane streets and pocket-sized lots with gorgeous flower gardens, and for its art galleries, gift shops, and restaurants.

There are many places on Cape Cod, particularly along its 200 miles of seacoast, that seem to look the way they might have appeared before the first European ever set foot on this land. And even when the human presence is felt, it is often unobtrusive enough to let the imagination skip back over the centuries to the time when the land was virtually undisturbed, eagles, as well as cougars and moose were common here, and silence reigned.
When you travel on Main street in the town of Barnstable from the villages of Centerville to Osterville, you cross the Bumps River.
Thomas Bumpas, grandson of Edward Bompasse, lived on Lovell's Way, Cokachoiset (now Osterville). Samuel Bumpas' house in the 1700's was at Skonkonet near the cedar swamp on Bumps River Road.

Beautiful. It's a word often heard from visitors to Corporation Beach in Dennis on Cape Cod. Each year the landscape's sweeping curve seems to get rejuvenated after winter storms put everything back in place hiding the months of last year's happiness and preparing the way for a new generation of beachgoers as they've done from time immemorial.

Cotuit is an Indian name meaning long fields or planting fields. Sachem Paupemtuck of the South Sea Indians sold the land in mid-seventeenth century to John Alden for the princely price of two brass kettles and a hoe. It was from this that the Kettlers, the Cotuit baseball team was named.
The town took off between 1840 and 1900 based on oysters and shipbuilding with farming of course, as the nutritional backbone of the community. It's not "COT-you-wit" by the way, but "ka-TOO-it".
You can imagine those century-ago times by looking at Karen's harbor landscape.

Wind creates sand dunes. Wind also makes them march across the land. Beach grass provides an anchor for the sand, as the sprouting plants slow the movement of wind-driven sand and help the dunes grow in size.
Slatted fences, often called snow fences, mimic the action of the grass, sometimes raising the ground level as much as three feet in a single year. Dune fences also help prevent erosion where the traffic of footpaths makes grass growth impossible. Dune fences are so effective, so ubiquitous, and so evocative of happy times at the beach—they seem almost to be a natural part of the dunes.

This is a view of Bass River from Union Street in South Yarmouth. The land on the other side of Bass River is West Dennis.
When Karen leaves the parking lot of The Cultural Center of Cape Cod, this is the view she sees. On a sun-lit day the river glistens. It reminds her of the nostalgic old Cape Cod..

Owned and operated by the Stone family since 1938, The Lighthouse Inn offers a wide selection of accommodations in oceanfront cottages with fireplaces, guestrooms and individual suites in the main house. They offer both a full American breakfast and five-course dinners in their dining room.
Also on the property is the Bass River Light. Dating back to 1855, the Bass River Light served seafarers until 1914 when it was decommissioned after the Cape Cod Canal opened. After being dark for 75 years the light was relit in 1989 as the only privately owned and maintained working lighthouse in the country. The light, which has a one-second flash every six seconds, is now recognized by The Coast Guard as the West Dennis Light.
