It there were not tides there would be no flats. Cape Cod's forest would grow right to the water's edge, but there are tides--powerful ones, that silently cover the shore and then, hours later, pull the sea away to reveal ever-changing beaches that attract young and old. Up to a mile wide, the flats are breeding grounds for all kinds of sea life. People who stay at beachfront resorts count themselves lucky having this ever-changing view.

What a fragile landscape you'd think, seeing the way a little creek created such a lovely spot as this in Eastham.  But it's a paradox: one of earth's strangest sea barriers is a tidal wetland with its wandering creek.  When left alone such a wall constantly rebuilds itself using weather as its strength.

In and out twice a day, the moon-driven tides that flow from Cape Cod's idyllic Pleasant Bay bring nutrients to the surrounding wetlands, which are spawning grounds for myriad sea creatures.

Visitors arrive, in and out on a less regular schedule, to marvel at this quiet scene. Artists, vacationers, fishermen, naturalists . . .all are drawn to this beautiful spot as if some tidal urge were moving them as well.

"Almost any view of Town Cove is memorable; from the windmill to the mouth, but I prefer this view from the head," comments Karen.

Atmospheric Pressure

(Harborview Beach, Sesuit Harbor)

Dennis has some beautiful beaches on the north side of Cape Cod. The Harborview 

Beach is one of them. It is for residents only during the summer but Brewster artist, 

Karen North Wells visited the beach in September to paint this oil. 

Many of her cards and prints of Cape Cod landmarks and seascapes can be bought 

in gift shops on Cape Cod and at her Underground Art Gallery in Brewster.

The sunfish, identified not only by its distinctive design but also by the familiar silhouette on the sail, is one of the world's most popular classes of sailboats. Weighing in at under 130 pounds, it's easy to transport and fun to sail. The wide selection of sail colors is familiar to anyone near water but seldom are so many of their bright patterns seen reflected as the ones artist Karen North Wells caught here at a woodland pond. 

"I was discombobulated," says Wells. "When I saw those shimmering reflections flashing their echoes across the pond, I knew I'd have to get to work painting them right away."

This footbridge in the charming little town of Wellfleet got its name from Tim Daniels, who lived with his wife and three children in a house next to the general store which he operated, across the street on the town side of the bridge. Children in the late 1880's were told to call their elders "aunt" or "uncle" even if they weren't related to them, so this became "Uncle Tim's Bridge."

The bridge was first built in the late 1700's but has been rebuilt at least three times. It connects the town to Cannon Hill, remembered most, perhaps, as the place where the town's Fourth of July fireworks are displayed.

Looking much as it looked when Henry Thoreau walked the Cape some 150 years ago, this village of artists nestles in the curve of land overlooking the harbor and its tidal marshes, seen here in their winter uniform.

In the distance, the Wellfleet landmark, Uncle Tim's Bridge, can be seen linking the town to Cannon Hill.

Most of us who've enjoyed the sight of Harwichport's appealing little harbor have seldom gone a-sailing; even fewer have sailed from here, but everything about the scene, from the ever-changing movements of the boats to the glimpse of the ocean beyond, speaks to the romantic in us. 

Because of its almost perfect circle, a retired sea captain, after the Civil War, created a ½ mile race track around a pond. After damage from several storms to the southern point close to shore, the town fathers decided to create a harbor and move the race track. So, a channel was cut, and the pond dredged. "Wychmere" comes from a cottage colony established in Harwich in the 1880's.

The Cape Cod Museum of Natural History in Brewster, Massachusetts, stands in the pine woods that border Cape Cod Bay. This scene from the Marshview Room captures the marsh with its blanket of snow revealing Wing Island and the bay beyond.

Along the way those on the port side undoubtedly saw places like this, never imagining that centuries later this particular place in Dennis would be called Mayflower Beach. It must have looked pretty much the same then as it does now.
