Third in series of lighthouses built in Chatham beginning in 1808, today's tower was built in 1877 as one of two that stood on either side of the lighthouse keeper's dwelling (now home of the Chatham Coast Guard). The other tower was moved to Eastham to become Nauset Light. Both are built of brick-lined cast iron. 
The intense 1000-watt beam of Chatham light can be seen from 28 miles at sea and identified by its "signature" of two flashes every ten seconds.

Karen, who hopes to do watercolors of landmarks in each Cape Cod town, felt that this scene will be remembered by all who visit Chatham.

Its signal is a flash sequence that repeats every 15 ½ seconds: flash one, then a five-second pause, then flash four, then a five-second pause, then flash three. It is often said that the 1-4-3 signal was used as a code for "I love you" from someone in the lighthouse to her sailor out to sea.

When mighty storms pound the cliffs along the Cape's Atlantic wall, ships could be wrecked there if Nauset Light didn't warn them of the danger. Identified by its alternating red and white lights every ten seconds, and painted in those colors for daytime recognition, the light has saved countless lives in its three quarters of a century of service.

Built in 1828 and rebuilt in 1876, Nobska Light is located in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. It stands 87 feet above sea level and can be seen from 15 to 17 miles at sea. Its signal is a white light flashing every six seconds (between 263 and 289 degrees, the light is red), and a horn has two blasts every 30 seconds. 

Originally, the lighthouse and its keeper's house were painted a dark maroon brown, but in recent years, it was painted white with a red roof.

Lighthouses are metaphors for being kept safe from harm, for guidance, and for safety in stormy times of life. And they are just plain romantic; dependable, and permanent, and straightforward, just what we look for in others. 

The split-granite block lighthouse was completed and activated in 1811. In its adjacent house lived the lighthouse keeper, Captain Simeon Bates with his wife and nine children. 

During the War of 1812, Bates's young daughters, Rebecca and Abigail hid behind some trees playing fife and drum when they saw two British barges approaching. The British mistook them for an entire regiment. The girls' courageous act has been recorded in many history books.

In 1968 the town awarded custody and administration of the Lighthouse to the Scituate Historical Society.
