If you weren't so busy admiring these sea roses you'd look off to the right and see the sparkling waters of Nantucket Sound. It's usually a very quiet sound but as the sailor knows, it can raise its voice to a roar now and then.

November,1620. Around the sandy hook of land at the tip of Cape Cod, a strange little ship named Mayflower sailed, after a harrowing 65-day trip from England. Land meant many things to the weary pilgrims but most of all it meant food and water. They stayed for a month there at that place we call Provincetown. It was here that the Mayflower Compact was written and signed, one of the first government documents in the history of white Americans.
"P-town" today is known for its narrow one-lane streets and pocket-sized lots with gorgeous flower gardens, and for its art galleries, gift shops, and restaurants.

The Brewster Store located at the intersection of Routes 6A and 124, proudly celebrates the annual Brewster in Bloom festivities. Built as a Universalist church in 1852, the structure was converted to a general store in 1862 and has been selling provisions and general merchandise ever since.
The Brewster Store offers a visual and educational feast of antique fixtures, machinery and memorabilia, in addition to a wide variety of items to delight shoppers of all ages. The main floor features coffee and donuts, groceries, toys and necessities. The Upper Hall is filled with fine gifts. The Brewster Scoop, underneath the store, is open summers to satisfy everyone's taste for fresh ice cream.

No, there must be grasses as well, and sea breezes, and perhaps best of all, the banks of wild roses that adorn the seaside, sometimes for miles and miles. The whole show can be enjoyed from this lookout.

Nantucket, MA
It's something of a mystery why flowering plants do so well on this island exposed on all sides to wild storms and salt spray. The secret may lie in the age of many of the houses and gardens on Nantucket, which have had plenty of time to establish themselves since the mid-nineteenth century's heyday of whaling.
Most of us, in this restless America of a new century, have gardens that show more promise than performance, and we go to longer-established places like Natucket to have our batteries recharged.

About the farthest thing from the hostile take-overs we read about on the financial page is a take-over of the floral kind: the roses spill out everywhere in their abundance. This village fairly shouts "roses" in the sleepy sunny summer days of vacation time,where lots of painters and photographers go to enjoy the seaside scenes.
Just don't call this town "sigh-a-skonset" or they'll know you're a mainlander; it's simply pronounced "skonset".

The Captain Freeman Inn is located in Brewster, a historic New England town famous for its 19th century China trade, sea captains, and their stately Victorian homes built in the shelter of Cape Cod Bay.
