If you think the ferry ride from Cape Cod to Martha's Vineyard is a short one wait till you take the ferry from Edgartown to Chappaquiddick; it takes about two minutes to cross the busy little harbor.

In this autumn view from the Chappaquiddick side, the old waterfront of Edgartown is seen at its best. Founded in 1642 and called Great Harbor, it became Edgartown in 1671, and was soon a thriving seaport. Its success produced the beautiful old houses of the waterfront area, soon a thriving seaport. Built by volunteer labor as a gift to the town of Brewster from the Board of Trade, the Brewster Bandstand was under roof in time to hold its opening concert during 1994's annual "Brewster in Bloom" celebration. Since then, evening concerts, once a week during the summer, have played to large and enthusiastic audiences.

If you call it "Barn Stable" everyone will know you're no Cape Codder. Here, it's called "BARN-stbl". But why barn, and why stable, for the name of a town?
The answer awaits you at the Barnstable General Store, seen here as it looks from the County Courthouse on historic Route 6A. Serving the public since around 1900, the store features cards, groceries, liquor, and a delicatessen.

Brewster caroling started at the Old Town Hall, when in 1970 the selectmen asked Brewster artist Gordon Brooks to play his cornet there under the porte cochere. Later, the owners of the Brewster Store asked him to play there instead. You can see him in this painting playing as he has for many years. 

Co-sponsor for the event is the First Parish Church. Song sheets are distributed and after the carols, the store serves mulled cider and refreshments near its venerable pot-bellied stove. 

The Brewster Store was built in 1852 as a Universalist church and was converted to a general store in 1862, selling provisions, general merchandise, and gifts ever since.

Chatham's first bandstand, built in the early 30's, was across from the Epicure where there is now a town parking lot. The present bandstand was built in the early 50's. It was named after conductor Whit Tileston on his 80th birthday.

Every Friday during the summer, free concerts are given from 8:00 till 9:30 P.M., and season attendance is in the thousands.

"To see the bandstand at dusk," says artist Karen North Wells, "is apple pie America at its best. The lights, the crowds, the balloons, the quaint bandstand, and above all, the stirring music, made me try to capture it all in this watercolor."

The store has delighted generations of youngsters with its huge selection of penny candies, and it offers unusual gift items to visitors and year-rounders alike.

Although many New England towns have replaced the commons obliterated by growth, the Cohasset Common is an original. This painting captures three of its best-loved buildings, the Unitarian Church (the First Parish), the Second Congregational Church, and the Town Hall. 

Because of these buildings and the Common's other examples of Georgian, Greek Revival, and Second Empire styles, Cohasset is on the National Register of Historic Places. Settled in the 1670s, the area was part of Hingham until 1770, after which it became Cohasset. A fishing and shipbuilding town, Cohasset retained its seaward orientation until late in the 19th century when its scenic waterfront and proximity to Boston made it a prime residential community as well.

Every July and August, families arrive with blankets and picnic suppers to be entertained by the local band.

One Cape Codder says he remembers the bandstand in the 1920s being located near The Snow Library where Friendly's Market is now. Later it was moved to the ball field at Eldredge Park. In the early sixties when The Cape Cod Baseball League was established, the bandstand was moved to Nauset Beach where it now resides.

Karen painted this picture for The Orleans Chamber of Commerce so that they could raffle the original and use the image for the program for "Pops in The Park," a musical production hosted by The Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra at Eldredge Park for hundreds of people. The proceeds from this event are used annually for a $10,000 scholarship for a deserving student.

When Karen captured this scene in 1989, the appealing little flare was still evident at the eaves, and the benches had not yet been labeled "Democrats" and "Republicans." The store is now a popular stop for hikers and bikers who use the trail.

Churches, houses and the Old Dexter Grist Millsurround Shawme Pond in Sandwich, Massachusetts, the oldest town on Cape Cod, incorporated in 1639. Several buildings from those early times still stand: The Hoxie House, the Sandwich Glass Museum, the Thornton Burgess House, the Heritage Plantation, the Boardwalk and the Mill. These structures draw many visitors from both on and off Cape—even in the winter when snowfalls sometimes enhance the New England charm of the town.
